Shrink Disc

The shrink disc is a flange-shaped external locking device that uses friction to lock the shaft hub. It is a frictionless backlash free connection, which can be used to replace the gap connection of the keyed connection. This is a relatively advanced mechanical connection method in modern machinery manufacturing activities. The shrink disc consists of one or two thrust rings with tapered bores and a matching tapered inner ring, by tightening the locking screws the thrust rings are pulled together, compressing the inner rings and applying pressure to the outside of the hub, locking them clamped on the shaft. As a result, the shrink disk is not in the load path and operates without torque. The torque can be transmitted directly by static friction through the joint surface between the shaft and the hub without intermediate parts(e.g. keys or splines).

The main function of the shrink disk is to securely couple the shaft and hub together by friction. For example, between the drive shaft and the transmission hollow shaft. The shrink disc creates a backlash-free connection by pressing the hub on the shaft. This connection is mainly used to transmit torque and the shrink disc only provides the required force and does not transmit force or torque between the shaft and the hub itself, so the force flow don't pass it. It is installed by sliding the shrink disk onto the hollow shaft and tightening the screws.

The clamping force is built up by compressing the inner ring through the tapered surface, reducing the inner diameter and increasing the radial pressure, which is provided and controlled by the locking screw. This is able to directly compensate for the gap between the shaft and the hub, avoiding overload.
